 Wantij

 duo exhibition Lauwersoog May 2015

Exhibition of paintings and lithographs in the Visserijloods in Lauwersoog.

We are used to the Wadden landscape being presented to us as something that you can experience, where you can relax. But are we really part of it? Do we experience it as a place that nourishes us?

The artists Wester and Kaldenberg are looking for that deeper connection. Wester sails on the Wadden Sea and collects oysters there; As a cook, Leen Kaldenberg prepares good and honest food with fish and shellfish from the Wad.

In the Visserijloods they present two different ways in which the Wadden Sea is experienced as two streams of art. Kaldenberg shows the rhythm of the water in his paintings with egg tempera. In this painting technique he is pre-eminently able to evoke the subdued richness of colors of the Wad.

Juco Wester draws on the hard stone the flow of the uninhibited progress of that same Wadden.  Once printed on a beautiful piece of paper, the subtlety of his lines suggests the continuous flow, or is it the brilliance of the light on the wet sand?

Both focus on the balance in the natural process. As if we are allowed to reflect on the inner harmony of our environment.

The exhibition does not show the expressive forces in that nature, but the silence of the wantij, that moment of balance where currents meet. May 2015
